Abstract: 

Feline palliative care requires minimally invasive, repeatable tools to support pain assessment, disease monitoring, and clinical decision-making. This study aims to identify multimodal hemogram-based biomarker profiles associated with pain, disease status, and progression in cats using point-of-care Vis-NIR spectroscopy. A total of 200 cats will be enrolled: 100 healthy controls and 100 cats receiving palliative care. Animals will be stratified by age, sex, reproductive status, breed, lifestyle, and clinical condition. Each cat will undergo two blood collections one month apart, using approximately 10 µL of blood from the ear or paw pad. Vis-NIR haemogram results will be compared with conventional laboratory methods. Owner questionnaires will assess behaviourbehavior, health perception, and tolerance of sampling, while veterinary questionnaires will integrate diagnosis, physical examination, bloodwork interpretation, and disease pathophysiology. By combining haematological, clinical, behavioral, and owner-reported data, this project seeks to develop a minimally invasive decision-support framework for feline medicine and welfare-oriented palliative care.
